Finding Money for Vacations PDF Print E-mail

By Melissa Tosetti

Last night I taught an in-depth Savvy Money class as part of a PTA fund raiser for my son Dante's school.  During the class, I talked about finding ways to save money for the things you want to buy or do such as vacations.

One of the attendees has been to several of my events in the past and is one of the savviest women I know.  I've had the pleasure of getting to know here over the years and to hear about her adventures as she travels all over the world.

One of the ways she pays for her trips is with a side business that she has on top of her 9-5 job.  She caters in-home tea parties.  She brings the china as well as the tea and treats and the host doesn't have to lift a finger.  Every few weeks she spends a few hours doing something she absolutely loves - catering tea parties - and the money she earns has taken her from one country to the next.

One of the other attendees shared how she and her son saved their recycling money for two years which allowed them extra spending money on the family's trip to Disneyland.

There are so many different ways to either earn or save money for your adventures.  It's just a matter of getting a little creative!

Make Your Weekends Longer PDF Print E-mail

What are your plans for this weekend?  Do you have a big project to do on the house?  Are you going to spend the weekend baking in the kitchen?  Are you planning a movie marathon?

Weekends are a precious time to relax, rejuvenate and do the things we want.  Why not give yourself even more time to enjoy being away from work?  Instead of waiting until Saturday morning to go to the video store and rent your movies, do it on your way home from work on Friday.  You just added an extra 30 minutes to your weekend!

That big baking project?  Pick up what you need during the week so you can immediately roll up your sleeves and start baking on Saturday morning instead of having to trek to the grocery store first.  By the time you get home from the store you'll be tired from fighting the crowds and will likely need to relax for awhile before you get in the kitchen.

The last place anyone wants to be on a weekend is at the home improvement store because EVERYONE is there.  Pick up what you need during the week so you can focus your time, energy and effort on actually doing your project.

In addition to saving time, by planning what you need for your weekend in advance, you will also be able to do a little research to find the best price for your supplies.

Are You Ready for Summer Vacation? PDF Print E-mail

By Melissa Tosetti

As you the chip ice off your windshield or shake the rain from your umbrella are you daydreaming of warm beaches or traveling abroad?  Turn your dreams into action and start planning your summer vacation NOW!
  • The first step is to decide exactly where you want to go.
  • Next decide when you want to go and for how long.
  • Plan out as many details as possible such as local spots that you want to visit and where you want to stay.
  • Decide if you should use a travel agent.  If so, call them now.
  • Start researching.  By planning ahead you can research and wait for the best deals.
  • Start saving.  The best trips are those that are paid for in advance.  If you don't have one already, create a savings account specifically for traveling and put a set amount of money in that account each pay period.  You can also funnel any extra money that comes your way into that account.
With the right attitude, planning for a vacation can be as much fun as the actual trip.

As a high school graduate in the 1960s, my mother-in-law spent three months traveling through Europe with her closest friends.  They spent two years planning and saving.  She talks as fondly about those two years of planning as she does about the actual trip.

How They Afforded Their Dream Cruise PDF Print E-mail
 By Melissa Tosetti

Here is a statement that needs to be understood - money should be enjoyed!

Why do we work?  We work so we can earn money to take care of ourselves, but too often we get into the mindset that we work to “pay the bills”.  That’s a TERRIBLE way to live!

Often we think we can’t do the things we want because we don’t have enough money.  At the same time, we are bleeding money by mindlessly spending it on things that are not important to us.

Every day I come in contact with people that are just in arms reach of achieving their financial goals, but they can’t see it.  They need guidance to get them there.

An example of this is two women I met during a speaking engagement a few months ago.  They worked together as administrative assistants and told me that they always talked about going on a cruise to Mexico, but never seemed to be able to put the money away for it.

I asked them if they knew how much a cruise to Mexico cost. They said no.  I suggested they go home and find out how much the trip would actually cost, including getting to the port.  The next day I received an email from them saying that a four day cruise to Mexico would cost $319 and because they lived in driving distance from the port, it would take just one tank of gas to get them there and back, plus $15 per day to park their car.

During our initial conversation they mentioned that they go out to lunch every day.  I asked them if they would be willing to take their lunch to work four days a week which would save them $32 - $40 weekly and $128 - $160 per month.  If they were willing to do that, they would have the money for their cruise in just over two months.  Of course they would want to set aside money to spend while on the cruise, but in two months they could actually purchase their tickets.

Six weeks later I received an email from them saying that they had just purchased their tickets and were leaving the following month.  Once they realized the trip was attainable, they were able to find so many other ways to save for it - achieving their goal far faster than they ever imagined!

They realized that sitting on the deck of the ship, sipping margaritas while watching the Mexican coastline pass by was going to be a far better memory than any deli sandwich eaten in a hurry at their desks.

The Savvy Life Philosophy is to save money on the things that are not as important to you so you can afford to spend money on the things that are!   Identifying where to save and where to spend amplifies the power of every dollar and is key to living savvy!
